

Michael Smyth CBE - Consultant, Clifford Chance (London), Senior Adviser Quiller Consultants

Michael Smyth was for many years a Clifford Chance partner and he remains a consultant to the firm. He is now Senior Adviser to Quiller Consultants.
He was made a Commander of the British Empire in 2009 for his pro bono legal services.
He is the author of Business and the Human Rights Act and a Consulting Editor of the UK Human Rights Law Reports. Among his many charitable commitments he is Chairman of Law for Life, the Foundation for Public Legal Education.
He is also a Board Member of ISLP and ISLP-Europe.

Nicholas Cheffings - Partner, Hogan Lovells (London)
Trustee, ISLP-UK
Nicholas is a member of the Hogan Lovells Board. In addition to heading up the real estate disputes (property litigation) team in London and leading the international practice area, Nicholas specialises in Real Estate Partnerships, outsourcing and major project work.
Nicholas is "lauded by clients for his 'ability to see the bigger picture' and his judgment" (Legal 500) and "respected by peers for 'knowing the tricks of the market' while clients find his sense of humour adds flavour to his pragmatic and commercial approach" (Chambers).
Nicholas, and the London team he leads, specialise in all aspects of commercial property litigation for a wide range of clients, covering all sectors. Amongst his particular specialisms, Nicholas is one of the very few UK lawyers who have vast experience, and a deep understanding, of the rent review market.
Nicholas has the Higher Rights of Audience qualification and frequently sits as an arbitrator and also as a legal assessor/advisor to surveyors, arbitrators and independent experts. He is an accredited mediator and has sat as a mediator on a number of occasions on high value disputes. Nicholas recently chaired the RICS Forum investigating the setting of rents for public houses in the UK.
In addition to his litigation work, Nicholas has been involved in some of the UK's most notable structured sale an leaseback and surplus portfolio transactions. He has also acted as a project leader on major corporate outsourcings.
Nicholas is also on the Executive Committee of ISLP-UK.

Gavin Davies - Partner, Herbert Smith (London)
Trustee, ISLP-UK
Gavin specialises in international mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, minority and other investments, and restructurings. He acts for financial investors, major multinationals and investment banks, and has particular experience in the TMT and energy sectors.
Gavin leads our international private equity practice, acting on investment and funds matters, for clients that include Blackstone, Chelsfield and Hanover. Gavin also advises the Government of Sierra Leone on a pro bono basis.

Susan Hazledine - Partner, Allen & Overy (London)
Trustee, ISLP-UK
Susan Hazledine has conducted commercial litigation for a wide range of companies and financial institutions. Her experience both in court and in arbitrations includes general contractual disputes and complex business reconstruction and insolvency claims. Susan has been involved in product liability claims and a variety of defamation work. She worked in Allen & Overy's Hong Kong office for over three years.

Robert Kapp - Counsel, retired, Hogan Lovells (Washington D.C.)
Trustee, ISLP-UK
Robert Kapp is a co-founder and Board Member of ISLP.
Robert practices principally in the tax area. He devotes considerable time to tax controversy matters, and represents clients in the American federal courts and before the Internal Revenue Service. He advises a number of universities, hospitals, charitable organisations, and other non-profit organisations on tax and other matters. He also counsels clients on issues surrounding corporate social responsibility. He has served as an arbitrator and a mediator in a number of commercial disputes.
Robert entered private practice and joined Hogan & Hartson in 1961. Prior to that and upon graduation from law school, he entered the Attorney General's Honors Program and served as a trial attorney in the Tax Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.
Robert has taught federal taxation courses at the National Law Center, George Washington University. He has written on a variety of subjects relating to federal tax law and has lectured at professional seminars and institutions.
Robert has been active in organisations dedicated to the advancement of civil rights and civil liberties. He is past-national Co-chairman of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. He is the Co-founder and Co-President of the International Senior Lawyers Project, which makes experienced lawyers available, on a pro bono basis, to provide assistance on international human rights, economic developments, and rule of law projects. He is also a Member of the Boards of a number of other public interest law groups.
Robert is also on the Executive Committee of ISLP-UK.

Ramon M. Mullerat - Chair, KPMG Abogados SL, Barcelona

Ramon Mullerat OBE is the Chair of the ISLP-Europe Board.
Ramon is a lawyer of the Barcelona Bar and the Paris Bar, honorary member of the Law Society and the Bar of England and Wales, and off-counsel of KPMG Abogados in Barcelona. His past and present memberships and appointments include the presidency of the Council of the Bars and Law Societies of the European Union, Co-Chair of the Human Rights Institute of the International Bar Association, member of the Council of Justice of Catalonia and Co-Chairman of the Commission on Corporate Social Responsibility of the International Bar Association, and membership of the American Law Institute and the American Bar Foundation.

Tim Soutar
Tim read Jurisprudence at St Catherine's College, Oxford before joining Coward Chance. He became a partner in Clifford Chance in 1988, practising in their energy and infrastructure team until his retirement in 2005. As well as spending many years in Asia, he ended his career with the firm as the resident Managing Partner for the Gulf Region. In addition to his work with ISLP-UK, where he manages the Tanzanian Law School Assistance Programme, he is Vice-Chair of the IBA Pro Bono & Access to Justice Committee and Chairman of the Executive Committee of Blackheath & Bromley Harriers AC.

Graham White
Trustee, ISLP-UK
Graham White is Executive Partner at Slaughter and May, responsible for overall management strategy, including compliance and finance. Before taking on this role, Graham was the partner responsible for Graduate Recruitment and Head of the Commercial Real Estate group, with particular expertise in landlord and tenant work, structured finance and investment sales and purchases.

Fouzia Javaid
Director, ISLP-UK
Fouzia is a UK-qualified solicitor with experience of working in City law firms, and also has human rights experience. She trained at CMS Cameron McKenna and then qualified into the EU and UK competition team at Cleary Gottlieb Steen and Hamilton (London), where she practiced competition law for three years. She then worked as a lawyer at Public Interest Lawyers with Phil Shiner, acting as the lead solicitor on high profile cases relating to the mistreatment of Iraqi civilians by UK armed forces in Iraq, such as Al Saadoon and Al-Jedda.
Fouzia has also worked pro bono for Reprieve in Islamabad, Pakistan, where, as part of Reprieve's work on secret prisons, she assisted with litigation on behalf of Pakistani civilians detained in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Additionally, Fouzia has worked pro bono for a South African NGO, the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation. Fouzia also has an LL.M in International Legal studies from New York University, specialising in International Human Rights and an LL.M in Comparative European and International Law from the European University Institute in Florence. Having a solid understanding of life as both a commercial lawyer in the City and more recently as a human rights lawyer, Fouzia is well suited to this new role.

Tina Shaw
Personal Assistant, ISLP-UK
Tina Shaw started work at a firm of chartered surveyors. She then went on to work in several law firms as a secretary. She started at Dresdens, a small firm in Covent Garden for a Partner. Then she joined Denton Hall & Burgin (now Denton Wilde Sapte) for two and a half years, working for a lawyer in the Conveyancing Department. Later she worked as a secretary at Freshfields for three years. She then joined Clifford-Turner (which after merging became Clifford Chance), where she worked initially as a PA to the Personnel Partner in Litigation for 15 years and when he retired, she worked for the deputy CEO, for four and a half years. In 2009, Tina started work as a PA for International Lawyers Project, and Tina now acts as a PA to the Director of ISLP-UK.

The International Senior Lawyers Project-UK ("ISLP-UK") seeks a senior-level barrister or solicitor with experience in the legal systems of the Commonwealth for potential desk-based pro bono assignments related to judicial review cases in Jamaica, before the Supreme Court of Jamaica.
Oxfam have asked ISLP to recruit lawyers to help prepare for the upcoming global arms trade treaty negotiations.
