The International Senior Lawyers Project-UK ("ISLP-UK") seeks a senior-level barrister or solicitor with experience in the legal systems of the Commonwealth for potential desk-based pro bono assignments related to judicial review cases in Jamaica, before the Supreme Court of Jamaica.

ISLP expects to receive requests in the foreseeable future from a Jamaican human rights NGO, that assists victims of police brutality, for a highly-experienced lawyer to provide pro bono advice and guidance on its confidential cases.  The candidate must be a common law trained lawyer with experience in public law, particularly judicial review.  Experience with police misconduct cases is highly desirable.  At this stage, we are looking for volunteers to be added to a roster so that we can contact potentially interested volunteers in the future should our Jamaican partner require the assistance of a volunteer for future judicial reviews which it hopes to bring.

As an example of the type of case on which assistance may be required in the future, our Jamaican partner has already requested assistance on a case which involves a challenge to an administrative decision to promote a senior police officer who has been the subject of numerous allegations of misconduct constituting disciplinary/criminal offences.

On this particular above-mentioned case, the type of assistance sought by the NGO's legal staff was as follows:

(i) review of the case file of a specific judicial review police misconduct case relating to Jamaica and advising by email/phone on any tactics and relevant case law, particular UK case law, which could be used in the case;

(ii) advising our NGO partner via email/phone on international standards relating to police misconduct.  Our partner would utilise this advice in its strategy on this particular judicial review case.

No travel is required.  Please note that this is request for assistance to be added to a rosta for future judicial reviews our Jamaican partner hopes to bring.  We understand that expression of interest at this initial stage does not mean that a volunteer would in fact still be available in the future should our Jamaican partner require assistance.

For more information or to apply, please contact Fouzia Javaid, Director, ISLP-UK in London at fjavaid@islp.org or on +44 207-006-4910.
